Bringing Wine Country Home
Sonoma, California.
As soon as you hear the name, you begin to dream of wine country…
Fields of vineyards & wineries amid casual, yet elegant farmhouses; an area where hospitality meets home.
It’s a dreamy vacation that you never want to end, and so we thought, what if we could bring Sonoma home?
The Sonoma by McIntosh, was designed to reflect casual living, with elevated style! We’ve worked closely with our draftsman, to design a floor plan that offers a space that’s built to entertain, while hosting a fluid indoor / outdoor living experience.
When it came to the selections for this project, they were made with a clear intent on what the whole home will represent: a very warm, inviting, and grounded space. Throughout the home you will find many warm tones, including: natural oak floors, creamy white countertops, wood toned cabinet features, and a touch of brass!
We’re often asked - ‘Where do you begin when it comes to your selection process?’
For us, it all begins with what inspires us!
Nick and I love to travel, and it’s our biggest source of inspiration thus far. We love to soak in every aspect of design that we observe within residential properties that we see, along with boutique restaurants and bistros that we visit. And of course...we love to follow the work of designers and architects that we admire - coffee table books are a must!
So whether we’re sharing our clients' vision with their custom home design, or our personal vision as we dream up our spec homes, there are endless amounts of inspiration within every aspect of our homes!
As soon as we know what our vision is, the selection process can begin!
We typically start with flooring and countertops.
The flooring is generally the largest amount of material that you will have in your home, so it needs to set the tone for the entire space (there is nowhere that the floor does not exist!). We want to make sure that all of our other selections compliment the floor perfectly. Once flooring is selected, we turn to the countertops.
The kitchen is a focal point within every home! The countertops are not only a space where you hangout, work, cook, and entertain...but an element of design that is immediately visible once you enter into the room. So they need to make a statement!
From here, we find it’s much easier to build everything around these initial selections. We can start to dive into sourcing, tile, paint, hardware, cabinetry, et
The exception to this approach would be if we, or our client, have a particular piece in mind that absolutely needs to be incorporated into the home….then this piece will set the tone for the rest of the selection process! Such pieces could be anything from a chandelier, to a piece of furniture, a piece of art, or even just a particular piece of material that they / we have in mind. The more creative we can be throughout our design process, the better! We love to tailor a unique design experience that comes through in the end result.
Speaking of creativity, you’ll notice that we love to discuss balancing budgets within home design, and ways that you can be creative with your selection process. The reality is that most of us have to balance our budgets in one way or another when it comes to building our “perfect” home, and this doesn’t need to translate into giving up your dream selections!
For The Sonoma, we really wanted to have a statement countertop within the kitchen as it’s a high exposure area, so we opted to go with a premium quartz countertop. To balance our budgets, we then selected an exquisite, entry level quartz countertop that will be positioned within the bathrooms and laundry room. Again, something to keep in mind is that “entry level” selections can offer a really great aesthetic, and shouldn’t be written off as “basic”.
And now for our favourite part of the selection process! Once our selections are finalized, we love to pull them all together into a flatlay so that we can start to see the full vision come to life!
Welcome to The Sonoma!
